Johannes Hahn welcomes peaceful transition of power in Chisinau

Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn welcomed the peaceful transition of power and congratulated Prime Minister Maia Sandu on the steps she had already taken to start delivering on her Government’s reform agenda. He called the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova to discuss the latest developments in the country, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the European Commission.

Commissioner Hahn stressed the European Union’s readiness to work with the new Moldovan government; he also confirmed to the Prime Minister that substantial EU support and advice can be rapidly mobilized once the conditions are met and the new government delivers for citizens, including on economy and when it comes to the respect of the rule of law, judicial reform and ensuring media plurality.

Both Commissioner Hahn and Prime Minister Sandu confirmed the mutual commitment to strengthened and consistent implementation of the Association Agreement with its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, in full respect with its core principles of the respect of the rule of law and democracy.

The Prime Minister invited the Commissioner to Chisinau at the earliest possible opportunity.

Johannes Hahn paid a visit to Moldova at the start of this June. He then said the EU is interested in seeing a stable Government and a solid majority in Parliament in the Republic of Moldova so that the politicians could work together for the people’s benefit.
