European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn believes the implementation rather than the adoption of reforms is the big problem of Moldova or Ukraine at this moment. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, Johannes Hahn spoke about the Europeans’ disappointment caused by Moldova the past year, IPN reports.

“As many others, I’m sincerely disappointed at Moldova’s performance the past year, after the situation in 2014 looked much more promising with the signing of the Association Agreement,” stated the European official.

Johannes Hahn considers that all the political crises that followed were ‘artificial’. This voiced hope that the new government understood what it has to do. He reminded that the European Union now puts its hope in Moldova’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund so that the external financial support could be unlocked. The official said that he discussed a special loan with the Romanian partners, making reference to the loan of €150 million promised by Bucharest last autumn.

“We must rethink the strategy so that our assistance is addressed directly to the population,” said the European Commissioner, adding that it should be clear that the European Union supports a particular development course of the country, not a particular government.

The European official noted nobody believes that other new countries will be accepted into the European Union during the next two-three years because the candidate countries are not ‘ripe’ enough.
