Joe Biden hails Moldova for 'powerful message of democracy'

Moldova's experience proves that political transition can be peaceful, that free and fair elections, and a genuine commitment to reform can transform democratic values into reality, said US Vice President Joe Biden during his speech at the National Opera Square in Chisinau. The American vice president said that he came to Moldova to congratulate its people not only on the 20th anniversary of the country's independence, “but also for the powerful message of democracy addressed to millions of people beyond your country's borders”. He added that Moldova knew from its own experience that building democracy was not easy, “but you also know that it's worth the struggle”. “You should be proud of what you have done. President Obama and I, all the American people, have watched that struggle and celebrated your success. We are determined to help you build on your achievements. We strongly support your commitment to political and economic reform and taking on hard issues”, he stated. While applauding Moldova's progress, Vice President Joe Biden suggested that the Moldovan government had still much work to do: “Let me be clear that it cannot be democracy without a transparent legal system and without a commitment to fight corruption and human trafficking”.
