The jobs provided on the labor market of Moldova are not attractive to young people who mainly have higher education. This happens amid a over-supply of jobs for unskilled workers. In 2015, 29% of the working young people had an education level higher than that necessary at the occupied post. This was primarily typical of men.
Some 20% of the active population are people aged between 15 and 29. The unemployment rate among young people is 18.6%. The men and young people from rural areas are the most vulnerable ones, shows a report presented in a roundtable meeting on November 24, IPN reports.
Vice director of the National Institute for Economic Research Olga Gagauz, head of the Demographic Research Center, said each third person is employed informally. The highest informal employment rate is recorded in agriculture, followed by the service sector and industry.
The salary is a very important aspect for the young people looking for a job. The average salary of the employed young people is 2,771 lei, while the acceptable salary for young people is 3,569 lei. Thus, over 70% of the young people rejected the vacancy owing to the size of the offered salary. The salary of young women is usually lower than of men in almost all the areas, the gap being of 15%.
The unemployment rate among young people in Moldova remains high, varying around 69% during the last ten years. Among the inactive young people, the number of persons with higher education trebled, reaching 17% in 2015.
The report authors recommended designing special programs to actively involve the local public authorities and establishing public-private partnerships so as to improve the supply of jobs.
Eduard Mihalas, UNFPA Program Analyst on Population and Development and Gender, said the projections show the population will continue to decline next year, including the number of young people. That’s why the organizations should be offered support to employ young people.
The study is based on the analysis of the labor force statistical data of the National Bureau of Statistics and targeted the people aged between 15 and 29.
