Jewish community against construction of joint museum of Holocaust and Soviet occupation

The Jewish Cultural Community of Moldova is against building a joint museum of the Holocaust and Soviet occupation. In a news conference, the community's representative Alexandru Bilinkis said the joining of two museums with such an important historical past is not a good idea. “We support the exhibition commemorating the former deportees that was opened at the National Museum of Archeology and History because it was a common tragedy. The stands could include photographs of deported Jews. But the Holocaust is something else. The people could return from Siberia, but nobody survived the gas chambers,” Alexandru Bilinkis said. Another representative of the Jewish community Alexandr Pincevskii said the authorities had to discuss this initiative with the people and find out the opinion of the Jewish community before merging the two museums into one. In a communique issued earlier this week, the Chisinau City Hall says Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca intends to open two museums in the capital city, one dedicated to the Holocaust and the other one dedicated to the Soviet occupation. Asked by Info-Prim Neo to comment on the Jewish community's objections, the head of the City Hall's press office Vadim Branzaniuc said the mayor's message was probably misunderstood. According to him, the place where the museums will be built is yet to be selected.
