The Chisinau public can watch the play The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare performed by the Theater Company “Ryutopia” from the Japanese town of Niigata. The play will be staged at the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu” on July 26 and 27 starting at 18.00, Info-Prim Neo reports. The performance is put on by director Yoshihiro Kurita. The troupe “Ryutopia Noh Theatre Company” is the most famous “No” theater company in Japan. In 2006, this production was the surprise of the Shakespeare Festival in Craiova. Ryutopia came to Chisinau at the invitation of “Eugene Ionesco” Theater and director Petru Vutcarau. The performance in Chisinau forms part of a broad European tour. Art critic Larisa Turea has told Info-Prim Neo that The Winter’s Tale is an exceptional play with an extraordinary stylistic unity. It is performed in the traditional Japanese genre “No” (also named “theater of masks”), which is four centuries old. In a way it is contemporary with Shakespeare. The first performances were given at the palace of the king and in temples. The “No” theater is in essence a noble and sacred theater. The play is simple and symbolically deep. The actors wear traditional Japanese consumes and masks. The décor is very subtle: only a tree of life and fire globes that symbolize the eyes of God, says Larisa Turea. The critic recommends the theater lovers not to miss this extraordinary production of William Shakespeare’s comedy, which is an absolute novelty for Moldova. The play is staged in Japanese, with subtitles in Romanian (on July 26) and in Russian (on July 27). The text from Shakespeare’s play will be screened. The tickets are available from the booking office of the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu” for 30 to 200 lei.
