Japan offers additional emergency humanitarian assistance for Ukraine and neighboring countries

On April 5, the Government of Japan decided to provide additional US$ 100 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to assist the people of Ukraine who are facing hardship in Ukraine and neighboring countries, IPN reports.

This is to embody the offer of additional emergency humanitarian assistance conveyed by the Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on March 24, responding to urgent needs in such areas as health and medical care, food assistance and food security, and protection of displaced people in Ukraine and neighboring countries, Moldova, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Czech Republic, and through nine international organizations and Japanese NGOs.

With the implementation of earlier assistance announced on March 11, this builds Japan’s support in response to the current situation up to 200 million US dollars in total. The Government of Japan will continue to provide support for and stand by the people of Ukraine who are facing hardship, in collaboration with the international community, including the G7 members, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said in a press release.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will receive US$14.5 million for non-food items, shelter and protection. The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) will get US$14 million. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is offered US$ 10 million for child protection, health and medical care, nutrition, education. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will receive US$ 10 million for health and medical care, food and non-food items, water and habitat, protection, mine action.

The World Health Organization (WHO) will get US$ 9.5 million for health and medical care (medicine, personal protective equipment, medical devices). The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will be provided US$8 million for health and medical care, WASH, evacuation assistance.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will get US$8 million for health and medical care, protection (counter-trafficking, data analysis on internal displacement, humanitarian border management, protection from sexual exploitation and abuse, etc.),WASH. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will be allocated US$4.5 million for protection (debris removal, mine action). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will be offered US$3million for restore of agricultural production (planting, etc.), while Japanese NGOs (through Japan Platform) will get US$18.5 million for health and medical care, food, non-food items, wash, shelter, protection (psychosocial support), education (mine risk education).

Also, as an assistance under Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Project for Strengthening Preparedness and Response to the COVID-19 and other Emerging Infectious Diseases financially contributed by Japan, the Government of Japan has approved the financial support of US$ 9,500,000for WHO emergency response to address COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in Ukraine and neighboring countries. Medicines, personal protective equipment, medical devices and others will be provided to displaced people in Ukraine and neighboring countries, such as Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Moldova through the WHO Regional Office for Europe. This assistance forms a part of Japan’s US$ 100 million in additional emergency humanitarian assistance in Ukraine and neighboring countries, which was decided on April 5.
