Japan and IOM offer Moldova humanitarian aid intended for Ukrainian refugees

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations received a lot of humanitarian aid that includes forklifts, trailers and two minibuses. The goods that were bought with funds provided by Japan and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will be used to offer assistance to Ukrainian refugees, IPN reports.

In the donation ceremony, the head of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations Alexandru Oprea said these goods provided by the people and the Government of Japan will strengthen the Inspectorate’s operational capacity for ensuring a better response in case of a new large flow of foreigners. “In particular, the donation is important because we are close to the cold period of the year and additional risks are anticipated,” stated Alexandru Oprea.

Owing to substantial support from Japan, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations started to implement a project to build and supply to Moldova 19 firefighting vehicles. “Today’s donation supplements the support offered by Japan to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations for the benefit of the citizens,” noted the official.

Japan’s Ambassador to Moldova Katayama Yoshihiro said the tragedy in Ukraine that started half a year ago made many women and children look for a shelter in other countries, including the Republic of Moldova. Personally, he followed the situation and was impressed by the actions taken by the Moldovan authorities and the people of Moldova, who opened their doors and housed Ukrainians.

“You are a big-hearted nation. In the name of the Government of Japan and the people of Japan, I would like to express my admiration for this. Back in February, when this fully unjustified war started, the Government of Japan began to take a number of decisions, including to provide rather generous financial assistance and a large part of these financial resources was directed to international organizations, among which is the IOM. And now we mark this moment by which we can make a donation of such equipment. And I hope that this equipment will be used by employees of the Inspectorate, who work day-to-day and very often sacrifice their own lives,” stated Ambassador Katayama Yoshihiro.

The value of the lot of humanitarian aid intended for Ukrainian refugees is €237,000.
