Janis Mazeiks: EU prepares sanctions mechanism for those who encroached on Moldova’s sovereignty

The European Union is working out a mechanisms of sanctions for the persons from the Republic of Moldova who encroached on the country’s sovereignty and democracy, said the Head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau Janis Mazeiks. According to him, the first names will appear soon on the list of sanctions imposed by the European community. The diplomat also expressed his satisfaction with the pre-vetting aimed at ensuring the cleanup in the justice system, noting that the assessment is independent, IPN reports.

The EU ambassador commended the work done by the commission that assesses the candidates for members of the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Superior Council of Prosecutors, noting that the pre-vetting process is independent and the decisions are taken transparently.

“For us, it is important that the pre-vetting is not only a position of national experts. It comes also to representatives of the opposition and this is a very good sign as it shows that in this key aspect, the opposition is also involved and is responsible. It is a responsible political player. In such a case, it is not a political process as it is actually an independent assessment. What we heard from international observes of this process, from foreign members of this assessment commission is that this process is indeed a collegial one and these decisions advance in a transparent way. I think we must continue in such a way,” Janis Mazeiks stated in the program “Reflection Points” on Vocea Basarabiei channel.

The diplomat also said that the EU is finalizing a mechanism of sanctions for the Moldovan oligarchs in conflict with the law.

“It is now clear what will happen as the EU has implemented a mechanism of sanctions for those who encroached on Moldova’s sovereignty and the country’s democracy. So, indeed, a sanctions mechanism was created recently, but it does not yet have a name. This is the next stage of the discussions for the member states given that this mechanism was finalized very swiftly. It was created during a record period of time and I think we will see the first names on this list soon. It is the decision of the member states. Unanimity is necessary, but from what we have seen until now, the trajectory is clear,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova.

Earlier, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that the authorities requested the partners from the EU to impose sanctions against a number of fugitives, including the Moldovan oligarchs who were sanctioned by the U.S. and the UK, Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor, and other persons who are in the UK.
