James Pettit: We do not support a particular candidate for Prime Minister

The United States wants a government to be invested in Moldova as soon as possible, but is not for a particular candidate for premiership, U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau James Pettit said in the program “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

“We are glad that the Republic of Moldova will soon have a government. We do not support a particular candidate for Prime Minister, but want the government to be formed because we want stability in the Republic of Moldova, the implementation of reforms and unblocking of relations with the IMF. It is not within our competence to support one candidate for premiership or another. These are internal policy matters and we do not intervene. We can only help you do reforms,” said the diplomat.

James Pettit does not rule out the possibility that the new parliamentary coalition was formed by corruption and blackmail. “I do not want to speak about political intrigues. It’s known that there are political commitments when forming alliances. We all know that there is corruption in Parliament and in other state institutions. But we do not have the right to become involved. It is the Moldovan voters who must go to court and defend their rights. The courts of law and the mass media are those that can prove this. Conclusive evidence is needed,” stated the diplomat.

James Pettit reiterated the position that the U.S. will cooperate with any government of Moldova, regardless of its political color. “I do not see a problem in the early elections. We will support any government, regardless of the color, to do reforms,” he said.

In this connection, the Ambassador specified that the message of the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland, which was disseminated by the Moldovan press yesterday, was understood incorrectly. “Victoria Nuland expressed her joy at the fact that a parliamentary coalition that can invest a new government was formed. Missis Nuland referred to the fact that this is good news, without laying emphasis on the composition of the alliance. This does not necessarily mean that we will support this alliance. We cannot become involved in the internal policies of Moldova,” stated James Pettit.
