No matter what the outcome of this autumn’s legislative elections in Moldova is, the United States will support any government that will be formed as a result of this process, U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau James Pettit stated in the program “Moldova live” on Moldova 1 channel, IPN reports.
According to the diplomat, the formation of a pro-European coalition consisting of a number of parties will be inevitable after the legislative elections. “The alliance, friendship and cooperation relations we have with the Republic of Moldova do not depend on the political parties. For us, the Republic of Moldova is a very important ally,” stated James Pettit.
As to the mixed electoral system, the ambassador said this can influence the results of the parliamentary elections in an unpredictable way. The Government should be very attentive when it ignores the advice of different European institutions. “For me, it is hard to believe that the Government will really change this decision as it is too late given that it is an electoral year,” he said, noting the introduction of runoffs could very positively influence the reflection of the people’s will.
In another development, James Pettit said Andrei Nastase’s victory in the mayoral elections represents a very clear message transmitted by most of the voters - that the path to the EU should be continued.
“I think geopolitics does not play such an important role for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. A kind of manipulation used by politicians to influence the vote is noticed sometimes. I think the emphasis placed on geopolitics should not play such a big role,” said James Pettit.
As regards the banking fraud, the ambassador said the citizens are losing patience over the lack of progress in investigating this. “We should yet not forget that it was a very difficult thing. The money disappeared abroad and cooperation with many governments is needed, but not all of these are ready to cooperate. The money was hidden and a very complex investigation is required,” stated the diplomat.
