Ombudsman Ivan Cucu, found shot to death Tuesday afternoon, seemed to be in good mood this morning, according to the accounts of the Human Rights Center's driver, Mihai Rusu. “He greeted me. He asked me how I was doing. Had I known what he had in mind, maybe I would have done something”, says Mihai Rusu. Ivan Cucu's body was taken out of the Center through the back door around 15:00. Access was denied to reporters and no official came out to talk to them. According to earlier police and ambulance accounts, the ombudsman shot himself with his own firearm in his office at the Center. The shot was heard by a staff member. The motive and the circumstances have not been elucidated yet. Ivan Cucu, born on 8 April 1947 in Ungheni, was appointed ombudsman for a five year-term on 3 November 2005. He was married and had two children. In 1999 he was awarded with the title “Honorable Man” in recognition for his prodigious practice of law.
