Iurie Leanca: PPEM will become an alternative pro-European party

The European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) is in opposition and is preparing to become an alternative, pro-European and pro-reform party in the possible early elections, the party’s chairman Iurie Leanca said after the meeting of the PPEM Political Council, IPN reports.

The politician told the journalists that they discussed the situation in Moldova and stated their opinions on the key problems faced by the country. As a result of debates, there was adopted a declaration. They also elected the deputy chairmen, the political bureau, the secretary general and the national and international secretariat.

Iurie Leanca noted that a working group will be constituted in several days to strengthen the party’s stance on the major problems confronting the country. “We have very good specialists and want to present the PPEM’s position on these issues,” he stated.

In the meeting, the members of the PPEM Political Council underlined that the current government caused an unprecedented crisis in the country and created a very tense atmosphere and the mounted protests area proof of this. “We consider the protests are beneficial for exerting pressure on the government. They speak about early elections, but we think that these are actually generated by the government, by its actions that led to a crisis. Immediate changes are needed in the country,” said Iurie Leanca.

As regards the defection of his former colleague Petru Stirbate from the Liberal Democratic Party, Iurie Leanca said that he didn’t invite this to join the PPEM, but such discussions will be held. Furthermore, the PPEM intends to increase its ranks, including in Parliament.
