Iurie Leanca: Post of President does not look very attractive to us

The European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) is not interested in the post of Head of State given the President’s limited powers, the party’s chairman Iurie Leanca said in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“We haven’t yet decided whether to field a candidate for the post of head of state or not. The hurry is injurious. The President’s prerogatives are limited. We will decide if changes in this respect are made. I want to hold a post to be able to show to the people that there are politicians who come to power not only to promote their own interests,” stated Iurie Leanca.

The former Premier said he was invited to work for a foreign institution on a good salary, but decided to remain in Moldovan politics because he wants to continue what he started in 2009.

He also said that the prerogatives of the Head of State should have been restored simultaneously with the restoration of the direct election of the President by the Constitutional Court’s Judgment of March 4. “I ascertain particular discrepancy between the method of electing the President and his powers. The kind of mandate of the President is very important,” stated the leader of the PPEM.

Iurie Leanca noted that the presidential elections should be held in autumn so that all the candidates have time to prepare.
