Iurie Leanca: It is naive to think that September 5 referendum is a trap for Moldovans working abroad
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca denies the accusations that the Moldovan and EU authorities agreed that Moldova will be offered support in liberalizing the visa regime if it “hands over” the Moldovans working illegally abroad. According to the official, such assertions show poor knowledge of the European mechanisms and ill will towards Moldova's European aspirations, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The minister says that only one condition ensures the liberalization of the visa regime – the efficient implementation of reforms in the legal system and internal affairs. Moldova is perfectly aware that this is the only correct path that it must follow. “Therefore, our efforts are aimed at reforming the mentioned areas, not at looking for questionable backdoor ways of access. Such an approach is fully nonprofessional and counterproductive,” Iurie Leanca said.
The Moldovan authorities realize that the real number of Moldovans working abroad is higher than the official figures. But is is very important that the Moldovan citizens are considered good workers who do not cause problems in the countries where they work. “It is naive to think that the countries where Moldovans work regard the September 5 referendum as an opportunity, a trap for identifying them,” Iurie Leanca stressed.
He also said that these primitive and intentionally distorted arguments coming from Moldova's non-friends are aimed at intimidating the Moldovans who are abroad into not taking part in the referendum.
The Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the Government of Moldova will use all the legal levers available to create optimal conditions for participation in the referendum for the voters.
