Deputy Speaker of Parliament Iurie Leanca said the European Parliament’s interest in the Republic of Moldova decreased following the political crises of the last few years. Speaking to journalists about the visit he made to Brussels on June 6 and 7 in a press briefing, Iurie Leanca said the Moldovan authorities should restore the Europeans’ interest in the Republic of Moldova so as to advance on the path of European integration, IPN reports.
“There is interest. The previous political crises certainly left an imprint on the perception of Moldova. We should restore the interest in the Republic of Moldova because without interest, especially on the part of the MEPs, it will be very hard to advance in the relations with the European Union,” stated Leanca.
He also said that he discussed the modification of the electoral system in Moldova with MEPs. The European Parliament’s July vote on the provision of €100 million in macro-financial assistance, which was postponed in May, will depend on the Moldovan authorities’ attitude to the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
Iurie Leanca noted that until July 16 those who plead for the change in the electoral system in Chisinau are to have discussions with experts of the Venice Commission, but he is not very optimistic about the developments.
