Iurie Leanca at Atlantic Council: Events in Ukraine teach lessons

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca delivered a speech in a meeting of the Atlantic Council, where he spoke about the developments in Moldova and the region and about the Moldova – U.S. relations. Referring to the situation in Ukraine, he said that those events teach us lessons, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the Government.

“The first lesson is that the set objective must be pursued. Ukraine’s decision not to sign the Association Agreement in Vilnius changed everything. We must be more decided and motivated to promote reforms,” said Iurie Leanca. According to him, the second lesson is that we should not concentrate on talks only, but should prepare the country and the economy for benefitting from the provisions of the Association Agreement. The third lesson is that communication with the people is necessary, while the final lesson is that the Eastern Partnership must be rethought and the European prospect must be offered – the mechanism for transforming the EU.

As to the security in the region, the Prime Minister underlined that separatism is a direct threat. “The frozen conflicts and separatist movements become very contagious,” said Iurie Leanca. He also said that the U.S. and the EU constantly supported Moldova’s European agenda. “Any other road will suffocate our developing democracy. We must ensure better living conditions for the people, better economic opportunities, higher salaries and access to infrastructure of a high quality.”

The Moldovan Premier is set to have separate meetings with the administration of the FMI and the World Bank.
