Iurie Bolboceanu will demand to hold those to blame for his conviction accountable

Ex-MP Iurie Bolboceanu, who was convicted of treason in 2018 and was acquitted in November 2020 after the prosecutors dropped the charges, is preparing a statement addressed to the prosecutor general. This includes all the violations committed by judges, prosecutors and operational officers in the case that featured him. In an interview for IPN, Iurie Bolboceanu said he hopes the persons to blame will be held accountable.

According to Iurie Bolboceanu, he has worked for two months on the statement as he had to collect the relevant information, “all those lies that were disseminated by Plahotniuc’s holding”. The information was systemized into 41 A4 format pages. This contains all the violations committed by the state institutions in relation to him, starting with the following, arrest and ending with the last day of the trial.

Iurie Bolboceanu demands that all the persons who broke the law should be held accountable. All the persons who were involved in the fabrication of this case should get the punishment deserved in a civilized state with the rule of law. He also intends to seek damages. “I will insist that the damages, no matter what type and in what amount they will be, should be paid at the expense of those to blame,” stated the ex-MP.

Asked what he intends to do in the future, Iurie Bolboceanu said he does not plan to become involved in politics anymore even if he was offered to join particular political parties or was urged to build his own party. He now supports the activity of the Human Rights Association “Right to Justice” that assists citizens in solving their problems with the legal system in Moldova.

The interview was held in the framework of IPN’s project “Exposing injustice through the media”. Iurie Bolboceanu was arrested on March 17, 2017. In March 2018, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason. Iurie Bolboceanu was accused of gathering and sending information of national interest, which could be used against the interests of Moldova, to officers of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, between October 5, 2016 and March 17, 2017. He was held for two years and three months, until a re-examination of the case was ordered. The criminal case against Iurie Bolboceanu forms part of the 38 political cases assessed by a group of prosecutors that was created last February following the Statements and Report of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which indicate a list with suspicions of illegal, abusive, selective and politically motivated prosecution of persons from the Republic of Moldova.
