Contradictory reactions came after the Moldovans authorities refused to subscribe to the sanctions imposed by states of the world against the Russian Federation. Iulian Groza, who was recently designated a member of the Supreme Security Council by President Maia Sandu, said the Republic of Moldova cannot oppose Russia from economic viewpoint and also from energy viewpoint. For his part, the acting president of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” Dinu Plîngău said the Republic of Moldova should join the West and should penalize Russia for the humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, IPN reports.
According to Dinu Plîngău, the Republic of Moldova should have imposed sanctions against Ukraine alongside the other states that chose to penalize the military aggression against Ukraine. The war in Ukraine opens a unique window of opportunity for the Republic of Moldova to join Ukraine it is efforts to become part of the EU and to submit an application for EU membership.
“Our authorities argue they cannot support the sanctions against Russia owing to the very great dependence on the Russian Federation’s energy resources. My opinion is that the Republic of Moldova should join the civilized world and support these sanctions in solidarity and by that anti-war pact about which all the civilized states speak. The Republic of Moldova now has the opportunity to ask for the hastening of the process of joining the EU alongside Ukraine. The West is now our only guarantee. We must join the civilized world as this act of Russia will not be forgotten soon,” Dinu Plîngău stated in the talk show “The Fourth Estate” on N4 TV channels.
For his part, Supreme Security Council member Iulian Groza said that supporting the sanctions against Russia is inopportune when the Republic of Moldova depends on Russia’s energy resources and has a fragile economy.
“Not only the Republic of Moldova didn’t support these sanctions. Georgia did the same even if it has much greater military and defense capacities than the Republic of Moldova. We must have a very balanced position and must realize that we cannot assume the risks that are assumed by the EU and NATO. The authorities of the Republic of Moldova strongly condemned this war and made a call for peaceful settlement. The decision not to subscribe to these measures was taken because the responsibility of the authorities is to ensure the security of our citizens. There are clear and justifiable arguments related to energy situation, our economy, the danger coming from Russia,” stated the IPRE president Iulian Groza.
Two days ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed and submitted Ukraine’s application for EU membership. Later, the European Parliament adopted a resolution by which it recommends the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to grant Ukraine candidate status.
