Iulian Chifu: There are signals of Moldova’s captivity

There is the danger that there will be supported Moldovan politicians who discredit the idea of European integration, former adviser to the President of Romania Iulian Chifu, who now heads the Center for Conflict Prevention and Early Warning, said in the talk show “European horizons” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

According to Chifu, currently Moldova has few chances of joining the European Union. “No captive state will become integrated into the EU. There are signals that a number of institutions in Moldova are captive and depend on the will of oligarchic politicians,” he stated.

The ex-adviser to President Traian Basescu considers that progress on the path of European integration can be made if Moldova takes internal sanitation measures. “Political will is needed, but the people’s will is even more important. Moldova must decide by itself and make effort. The people, by their vote, can determine the political will of those who are in power,” he said.

Iulian Chfu thinks the Moldovans are insufficiently informed about the EU. “The people are increasingly against corruption and the oligarchic system. This is welcome. I think those from Moldova should be told more about the advantages of integrating into the EU so that they understand that the road to the EU implies the shaking of oligarchic institutions. There were many oligarchic models that were combated by the European democratic model. But this cannot be done with the help of a magic wand,” he stated.
