Iulian Chifu: Moldova has chances at Riga Summit

Iulian Chifu, former adviser to the ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu, considers that Moldova has chances of becoming a candidate for accession to the EU after the Riga Summit. He made such a statement in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“Moldova, as Ukraine and Georgia, is a partner state associated with the EU. The European Union changed its attitude of last year, when it said there will be no enlargement over the next ten years. There is a document that hasn’t been yet published. It says that any state can aspire to more. At the same time, owing to the faced problems, the EU’s attractiveness diminished. So, the EU agrees that the partner states, including Moldova, can knock at its door to submit an application,” said Chifu.

The former adviser noted the phenomenon of corruption in Moldova threatens state security. “We were witness to what happened in Ukraine. Everything started from the corrupt Yanukovych administration. You must do more for the masses to exert greater pressure on the Government. Moldova could follow the path of Romania. The best reforms that produced results were done by the Nastase Government, which was considered the most corrupt one. Now the fight against corruption in Romania is so intense that even those who created the corruption combating bodies are imprisoned,” he stated.

Iulian Chifu said the tense situation in Odessa should worry the Moldovans. “The appearance of little green men in this city should be a signal of alarm for the Moldovans. Moldova should think how to ensure its security. The EU could help it in this respect. Anyway, Moldova does not separate from the EU, as the EU does not separate from Moldova,” he stated.
