Italian citizen accused of fraud
An Italian citizen risks spending up to 25 years in prison, in one of the penitentiaries from the R. of Moldova, after he had swindled several persons from Calarasi raion.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affaires press-centre, Marco Arena, aged 27, who lived with a woman from Calarasi, decided to line his pocket taking advantage of Moldovan women’s wish to work in Italy. This way, he gathered about EUR 13,000 promising them a workplace in Italy, but spent the money without keeping his word.
This week, Calarasi police arrested the Italian citizen, charging him with fraud. The victims claimed that they paid the man different sums of money for his promise to obtain legal contracts in Italy. In order to make the affair look credible the suspect requested the victims’ passports.
At the moment, Marco Arena is in custody based on art.195 (2) of the Penal Code of the R. of Moldova. If he is found guilty of misappropriation of large amounts, the man risks 25 years in prison.
