The method announced by the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) and the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPDA) to choose candidates for this autumn’s presidential elections causes confusion among the own supporters and this can have a negative impact at a certain moment, considers political analyst Igor Volnitski. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the analyst said that when presenting two candidates in the pre-election campaign, it will be very hard to explain to the people why one disappeared and why the other one must be voted, including by the supporters of the one who withdrew, IPN reports.
According to him, the negotiations on the right, between PAS, PPDA and the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), failed and the leaders of these parties realize that they cannot risk telling honestly the people that this process failed. There is a powerful expectation among the supporters of these parties – that the political right, which cannot be suspected of cooperation with the current government, will propose a common candidate.
Igor Volnitski stated that it is now not clear how this alliance will occur meanwhile, when the two are leaders of parties that appeared recently on the political arena and want to assess the own potential and there can be no better testing than the October 30 elections. This alliance can take place, but not in the first round of voting. The situation in the second round will be different – one of them will pass and the other one will have to support the first.
As to the other nominated candidates, the analyst said the decisions weren’t a surprise. The election campaign will be tough and will be dominated by misinformation and manipulation.
The PAS, PPDA and PLDM announced their intention to field a common candidate for President and offered the people the possibility of choosing between the PPDA chairman Andrei Nastase and PAS leader Maia Sandu. A decision will be taken towards the end of this month. The PLDM pledged to support any of the two politicians.
