On March 2 it is 21 years of the start of the Nistru armed conflict that took the lives of 386 persons and disabled about 300. The chairman of the National Union of Independence War Veterans Eduard Maican said the war isn’t yet over owing to the existing geopolitical interests. “The war will come to an end only when there are no political barriers,” Eduard Maican has told Info-Prim Neo. He considers that the problem will not be solved until this conflict is formalized. The solution cannot be found only at official meetings, including in the 5+2 format. “The people living on the two banks of the Nistru should be involved in different events,” stated Eduard Maican. According to him, if there was real interest in settling the dispute, the movement would be fully liberalized and there will be ensured broader communication between civil society from the two banks of the river, would be launched international and national projects that would involve the population. Eduard Maican considers that for the conflict to be solved, the right side of the Nistru should be developed so that it becomes attractive. “When there is harmony in the government in Chisinau and democratic, economic and social progress, we will be able to speak about the resolution of the dispute,” he stated, adding that Chisinau should be more insistent in demanding pulling out the Russian troops from Moldova’s territory, while the peacekeeping mission should be internationalized. The Nistru war started on March 2, when armed guards and Cossacks blocked the bridges over the Nistru and the barrage at the Dubasari hydroelectric plant, limiting vehicles’ access to Bender, Rybnitsa and Kamenka. The war lasted until July.
