The leader of the Moldova Platform Irina Vlah said the authorities ignore the will of the people on the subject of neutrality. According to her, the authorities fear that the opinion of Moldova’s citizens will disrupt the plans they have already outlined and the obligations they have towards someone. In his view, the reluctance of those who are in power to find out what the people think about such an important issue as neutrality cannot be explained otherwise.
“This abnormal, unordinary situation prompted me to address you. Given the government’s attitude towards the actions taken by me and my team over the recent weeks, I presume that the authorities have already decided how to act with regard to the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova and don’t need the people’s opinion. They are probably afraid that the opinion of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will thwart their plans,” Irina Vlah told a press briefing at IPN.
The leader of the Moldova Platform told about her attempts to convince the authorities to include an additional question in the referendum that President Maia Sandu aims to organize simultaneously with the presidential election – on the neutrality status of the Republic of Moldova. According to her, such an initiative was influenced by the statements made by the head of state and other leaders of Moldova, who admit the possibility of renouncing the country’s neutrality status.
“If those who are at the forefront of Moldova’s foreign policy have doubts about neutrality, I decided that it is logical to invite the country’s leadership to find out what the people’s opinion is on this issue. Moreover, no additional money from the state budget will be spent for the purpose, as the President has already proposed holding a referendum simultaneously with the presidential election. All that is required of the decision-makers is to agree to put this subject up for the referendum,” said Irina Vlah.
She noted that she called on the members of Parliament and then on President Maia Sandu to add the neutrality question to the referendum, but didn’t get a response. “The authorities’ indifference to this issue leads to the conclusion that the authorities have already decided how to act with regard to the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova,” said the head of the Moldova Platform.
