After the renewal of Vladimir Putin’s term in office, the main interest of Russia in Moldova will be to test the sustainability of the European agenda and the loyalty level of the pro-Russian forces to the Eurasian cause, political pundit Dionis Cenusa says in an analysis article for IPN Agency. According to the politologist, Russia’s policy towards Moldova can change during the next six years only if the government is taken over by the pro-Russian forces that often pleaded for the combination of the European integration with a strategic dialogue with Russia. Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius said the elections are definitely a matter of sovereignty, but the organization of elections and their transparency and correctness are no longer a national issue and influence and involve a broader community. Moldova is a Council of Europe member and the elections are thus not the exclusive competence of the Moldovan government. For example, no broad general consultations were held before amending the electoral system. The Venice Commission in its plenary session of March 16-17 issued a positive appraisal of the amendment of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova so as to modify the initial period for appointing judges and for selecting the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice and to specify the composition and powers of the Superior Council of Magistracy. Noting that the proposed changes meet the applied standards, the experts prognosticated a rise in the level of independence, responsibility and efficiency of the judicial system. Read more…

Nongovernmental organizations operating on the two sides of the Nistru River by the end of March can take part in a contest of grants for common initiatives aimed at building confidence by human rights education activities. The Institute for Democracy, in partnership with the Bulgarian Community “Rodoliubets” and the Center for the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Young Women, offers seven grants of €7,000 each within a European project to raise mutual trust between teachers. A project to strengthen Moldova’s capacities to fight trafficking in persons was launched on March 23 and will be implemented by the General Police Inspectorate in cooperation with the International Center for Migration Policy Development within the EU – Moldova Mobility Partnership. During almost a year, about 50 officers of the Center for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings will be trained within the project. Read more…

The first deputy head of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) Eugen Carpov, who heads the European People’s Parliamentary Group, was elected co-chairman of the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee by a majority of votes. Eugen Carpov said he was convinced that the new composition of the Delegation will represent with dedication the interests of the Moldovan citizens and will bring value added to the relations with the European institutions.
