IPN debate: If government satisfies demands, it will diminish its influence

If the government satisfies the demands put forward by civil society, it will diminish the influence that it has in the Republic of Moldova, but the rulers do not want this to happen, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT) Igor Botan said in the public debate “Need for communication and change. Virtual dialogue between civil society and the government on the prospects of the demands put forward by the Civic Forum”, which is the 50th of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

According to the standing expert of IPN’s project, if the government satisfies the demands presented by civil society, it will undermine its resistance constructions from the current government coalition. “It is evident that they do not want to do this. Their goal is to destroy the corrupt empire of their colleague who is now in jail and to strengthen the own empire with the same mechanisms: corruption and blackmail. These are the fighting instruments of this government. The demands, if they are satisfied, would significantly diminish the capacity of the existent government system to control the state institutions,” stated Igor Botan.

Director of the Institute for Public Policy Arcadie Barbarosie considers the authorities are unwilling to do something that will lessen their power. “It’s hard to do something that you know will ensure the independence of the National Bank and will prevent you from taking money from the other banks or the treasury, that the Prosecutor General’s Office, the National Anticorruption Center and the National Integrity Commission will no longer be fully controlled, that you will have to declare property owned somewhere outside the country,” he said, noting that he would like to see what property the rulers declare and what taxes these pay into the state budget.

According to the speakers, the government is trying to discredit the idea of the contests to fill the posts of National Bank governor, Constitutional Court judge and heads of different state institutions, including law enforcement agencies, because they want to continue to name their people and because they are afraid of appointing successful functionaries.

The public debate “Need for communication and change. Virtual dialogue between civil society and the government on the prospects of the demands put forward by the Civic Forum” is the 50th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
