Ionita risks losing post of economy commission chairman

The commission that examined the circumstances in which the law on the regulation of the entrepreneurial activity by licensing, known as the casino law, was passed and countersigned, suggested dismissing the Liberal-Democrat MP Veaceslav Ionita from the post of chairman of the parliamentary commission on economy, budget and finance. The commission’s report was presented in Parliament on October 13, Info-Prim Neo reports. The commission of inquiry’s head Raisa Apolschii, of the Democratic parliamentary group, said many contradictory statements were made during the hearings centering on this case. According to her, the then unaffiliated MP Veaceslav Untila, who proposed reducing the tax for casinos from 360,000 to 180,000 lei, said the day the law was passed Veaceslav Ionita himself asked him to insist that the given amendment be passed. The commission of inquiry reached the conclusion that Veaceslav Ionita and the consultant of the economy commission Andrei Conishescu abused their positions when they said that the amendment was approved tacitly. Another conclusion is that Veaceslav Ionita misused his power when he addressed the Government in the name of Parliament. After Raisa Apolschii presented the report, Veaceslav Ionita said that this is a shame for the commission of inquiry. “I think you said the word “Ionita” about 100 times. You probably have special feelings for me, together with the party,” he said, asking that he be explained what powers he misused as the commission’s chairman can only organize and hold the meetings of the commission. His faction colleague Tudor Deliu said all the conclusions made public by Raisa Apolschii were selected according to party and group principles. “I ask you to read the conclusion about Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar, where it is said that he countersigned the final text of the law that contained deviations, showing thus irresponsibility in fulfilling his duties. Why don’t you read this conclusion?” asked the MP. Raisa Apolschii answered that she does not have to read all the recommendations. Liberal MP Mihai Ghimpu, who promulgated the casino law while Acting President, said the commission of inquiry showed that the consultants and commission heads edit the laws as they are told or according to the interests. “My blame consists in the fact that I believed all those who put their signatures on the bill,” he said, stressing Veaceslav Ionita should be indeed discharged. The commission’s report will be sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office, which is to decide who is to blame. Damage of about 6 million lei was caused to the country’s budget after the amendment to reduce the casino tax was included in the law after the bill was passed in final reading. This February, the MPs restored the old tax.
