Ionesco Theater still waiting for a ‘modern and new’ stage
The works on the reconstruction of Eugene Ionesco Theater’s premises will begin shortly. According to authorities, the concept of the building that will house the theater, formerly an entertainment venue, is to be completed by July 1. The head of state urged the Government to give green light to the work on the reconstruction without delay, Info-Prim Neo reports.
At a presidential sitting, Vladimir Voronin highlighted the importance of using advanced technology in building cultural facilities.
The President also stressed the need for making efforts to provide high organizational standards for the VIII International Theater Festival (Eugen Ionesco Biennale), which this year will expand its coverage, showing plays not just in the capital city, but also in other localities of the country.
Probably the most popular theater in Moldova, Eugene Ionesco hasn’t had a stage of its own since its inception. The troupe was promised “modern and new” premises by President Voronin on 30 March 2007, yet nothing has changed much since.
“Eugene Ionesco” was founded on September 11, 1991 by a team of actors who graduated from “Shciuikin” Theater School in Moscow. The theater boasts a series of prestigious awards at international theater festivals: Tallinn (Estonia), Ivano-Frankovsk (Ukraine), Oradea, Bucharest, National Gala of Dramatic Recitals of the International Culture and Art Centre “Geroge Apostu”, all from Romania, and others.
