There is no clarity as regards the developments in the war in Ukraine. In recent times, Russia has achieved victories on the front line, but this will not make Ukraine accept peace negotiations, political commentator Ion Tăbârță stated in a public debate hosted by IPN News Agency.

The political commentator explained that during the two years of war, both of the sides had victories and defeats. The war in Ukraine revealed that the Russian army is badly equipped, while Russia’s military superiority is just a myth.

“Russia attacked the Ukrainian territory from three parts. The goal was to conquer the capital, Kiev, in order to take the Ukrainian state under political control. Here, the territory of Belarus was also used. Through attacks launched in the South, the Russian army aimed to ensure a land connection between the Crimean Peninsula and other territories that were previously conquered by Russia. I’m referring to the Donbass region. Russia wanted to take full control of Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. Over time, it has come to light that the Russian army is by far not so well equipped as it was previously thought. Now we have the most spectacular fighting in Avdiivka, Bakhmut. The lack of ammunition is the big problem of the Ukrainian army. According to military experts, the ratio is 1 to 5 or 1 to 10, depending on the front line,” explained Ion Tabârță.

According to the expert, although Ukraine is facing a shortage of weapons, this will not prompt the administration in Kiev to start negotiations on a possible ceasefire with Russia.

“Currently, the situation between Russia and Ukraine is relatively equal. Unfortunately, Ukraine does not have forces to inflict defeats on the Russian Federation on the front line and advance to liberate its territories. At the same time, the Ukrainian positions are solid enough not to want a ceasefire agreement, let alone a peace with Russia’s current leadership,” said Ion Tăbârță.

According to the political commentator, the Ukrainian administration is determined to fight until the liberation of all the occupied territories and peace negotiations with the current leadership of the Russian Federation are unlikely.

“The Ukrainian President said that he would not negotiate with the leadership of the Russian Federation, which started this war. Russia is in a better situation than it was a year ago, which allows Putin to utter different scenarios. Although Russia has recently achieved some victories on the front line, it does not have by far the capacity to inflict a defeat on the Ukrainian army so that Kiev agreed to sit down at the negotiating table. At present, we have no clarity about the developments in this war,” noted the expert.
