After the National Assembly “European Moldova”, the parties in the Republic of Moldova should sign a statement similar to the Sango Declaration signed by parties in Romania, said the chairman of the European Social-Democratic Party of Moldova (PSDE) Ion Sula. According to the politician, his party will take part in the consultations launched by President Maia Sandu and will suggest initiating a national campaign centering on the advantages of the European integration, IPN reports.
The PSDE leader noted that the National Assembly “European Moldova” should be not only a PR event of the ruling party, but should represent a common voice of all the citizens and political parties that want the Republic of Moldova to join the EU.
“We have the Snagov Declaration of 1995, when the parties of Romania stated their opinion and signed a joint statement with the Government, the academia, representatives of civil society concerning the European course of Romania. It would be good to sign a statement after this National Assembly and the signatories of this statement should be representatives not of only one political party, but of all the authentic parties that really want the European integration and do not mimic this process. We should show primarily to the citizens that this wish exists,” Ion Sula stated in the program “Résumé” on RliveTV channel.
According to the politician, the demonstration in support of the European course should be followed by the fulfillment of all the recommendations put forward by the European Commission when the candidate status was granted to Moldova. Also, information campaigns should be conducted to increase the EU’s attractiveness among the rural population.
“An event similar to the Great National Assembly was staged in 2014 and the participants then stated their support for the European course. But nine years have passed since then and we continue stagnating. As an apolitical President, Maia Sandu should treat this event with maximum responsibility so that all the pro-European political forces take part. The role of parties, including of the extraparliamentary ones, is very big. We should go through the villages of the Republic of Moldova and explain to the citizens why it is good to follow the European course,” said the chairman of the European Social-Democratic Party.
On April 10, President Maia Sandu announced that she convened a National Assembly called “European Moldova” for May 21. The event will take place in the Great National Assembly Square and is designed to transmit to the international community the Moldovans’ firm wish to be part of the European family.
