Ion Stefanita says he may be dismissed for his earlier statements

The Ministry of Culture ordered performing an audit at the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration. The Agency’s director general Ion Stefanita stated for Info-Prim Neo that since the organization was founded, the Ministry has never conducted an audit there. He presumes that the audit is connected with some statements that he made earlier. “I suspect that this audit will be used to fabricate irregularities and dismiss the director,” said Ion Stefanita. He stated that the last news conference where he accused the Ministry of Culture of being corrupt was an impulse. “The Agency’s work is transparent. We report about everything on the organization’s website. I have nothing to hide,” said the director general. The Agency was founded in 2006, while Ion Stefanita was named director in 2009. “When I was appointed director, I set a series of objectives and followed the principle “Poor, but Honest”. I’m glad that I was appreciated in the country and abroad,” he stressed. Victor Railean, the head of the Ministry of Culture’s Internal Audit Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that the inspection was initiated based on a Government Decision concerning the efficient use of public money and the observance of the legislation. Six institutions will be audited in 2012. The first is the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration. Victor Railean said they do not intend to dismiss somebody. The audit report will be ready at the start of February. In a news conference on January 25, Ion Stefanita said that monuments of national importance are demolished because of corrupt servants working at the Ministry of Culture.
