Ion Munteanu is to be invested as prosecutor general today

Ion Munteanu will be invested as prosecutor general today, June 1. Contacted by IPN for details, the President’s chief of staff Adrian Băluțel said the decree is be signed before the appointment ceremony.

The Prosecutor General’s Office on Friday evening announced that the solemn appointment ceremony will take place on Saturday, starting at 09:30 a.m., at the Prosecutor General’s Office. The ceremony will include the swearing-in of the prosecutor general, followed by speeches by President Maia Sandu, the prosecutor general and other guests.

Finally, Ion Munteanu, who holds the position of prosecutor general o an interim basis, will make statements for the press on the ground floor of the institution.

Ion Munteanu was designated winner of the contest to choose the candidate for the position of prosecutor general after he obtained the highest score from the members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors in the interview stage.

The appointment of the prosecutor general is one of the issues to be resolved for the Republic of Moldova to start negotiations for accession to the European Union. The negotiations are expected to start at the end of June.

The position of prosecutor general remained vacant after Alexandru Stoianoglo was suspended from office in early October 2021 and was dismissed at the end of September 2023. The presidential decree on his dismissal was based on the CSP’s decision of May 2022 by which the work of the prosecutor general was assessed as unsatisfactory. The post was held on an interim basis by Dumitru Robu and then by Ion Munteanu.
