Ion Munteanu was invested as prosecutor general. The oath-taking ceremony took place on Saturday morning at the Prosecutor General’s Office, IPN reports.
After taking the oath, Ion Munteanu said that he is aware of his responsibilities and remains anchored in the future and European path of the country and realizes the challenges that lie ahead. The Prosecutor General urged his fellow prosecutors to combine forces and raise awareness of their situation, so as to ensure the continuity of existing investigations and to show efficiency.
Attending the ceremony, President Maia Sandu said that the prosecutor general has a complicated mission, namely, to do more, faster, firmer than has been done so far in the justice sector. “Both I and the citizens are waiting for justice to be done. Those who committed acts of corruption, those who broke the law must be penalized. In justice, we must have honest people, good professionals, people who work for the Republic of Moldova and its citizens,” noted the head of state.
Dumitru Obadă, chairman of the Superior Council of Prosecutors, assured the prosecutor general that both the CSP and the entire body of prosecutors stand by him. “We remain anchored to the inherent values of the rule of law as the human rights and human dignity are the basic benchmarks,” said Dumitru Obadă.
Ion Munteanu was designated winner of the contest to choose the candidate for the position of prosecutor general, obtaining the highest score from the jury in the interview stage.
The position of prosecutor general remained vacant after Alexandru Stoianoglo was dismissed following the CSP’s decision of May 2022 by which the prosecutor general’s performance was assessed as unsatisfactory.
