Ion Luchianov qualifies to Olympic steeplechase final
Athlete Ion Luchianov has qualified to the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase, at the London Summer Olympics, reports Info-Prim Neo. He has covered the distance in 8 minutes and 22.09 seconds, ranking 11th.
The final is scheduled for Sunday, August 5. In 2008, at the Beijing Summer Olympics, Luchianov ranked 12th in the same competition.
Also on Friday, August 3, two other Moldovan athletes competed in the athletics tournament. Serghei Marghiev ranked 31st in hammer throw qualifiers, whereas Olesea Cojuhari ranked 33rd in 400 meter dash preliminaries. These results did not take the Moldovan athletes to the finals.
During the following days Zalina Marghiev (hammer throw), Elena Popescu (track), Iaroslav Mulinschi, Roman Prodius, and Natalia Cerchez (marathon), will represent our country in track-and-field events.
Young archer Dan Olaru has also finished his competition. He was beaten in the last 16 round of the arching competition by South-Korean Bubmin Kim, 1:7.
Today, August 4, only weightlifter Anatol Ciricu, who has good chances of going on to the Olympic podium in the 94kg category, will compete. This year he had become absolute European champion in this category.
Weightlifting is only discipline in which Moldova managed to get a medal at the current edition of the Summer Olympics thanks to Cristina Iovu.
The top medal rankings are led by the United States of America, who has won 21 gold, 10 bronze, and 12 bronze medals. Moldova shares the 46th place with 9 other countries that have won a bronze medal.
