Ion Druta celebrates 88th birthday today

Moldovan writer Ion Druta who is now in Moscow, on September 3 celebrates his 88th birthday. In a call-in for Radio Moldova, the writer said he is very glad that one more autumn came as the autumns are exceptionally beautiful in Moldova, IPN reports.

“Surely, the situation is now rather dramatic and difficult. Many villages are half-empty. There are also villages that are to be liquidated because almost no one lives there. It is sad. Besides, elections are coming and these simply consume energy and you must choose from where there is practically nothing to be chosen,” stated the writer.

Ion Druta addressed his readers, calling on them to find only nice things among the things around. “If you have a loaf of bread and a roof, don’t spoil the beauty of this day with too much wine, with hatred and envy, with all kinds of revenge and enjoy yourself,” he said.

The writer noted that he has worked for many years on the book “Silence of Earth”, which he considers the hardest and the most painful. It is a kind of synthesis that he hopes to finish by this yearend and will then meet with the readers next year.

Ion Druta was born in Horodiste village of Donduseni district on September 3, 1928. His first stories were published at the start of the 1950s. His works, brought together into four volumes, form part of the golden stock of the national contemporary literature.

In 1987, Ion Druta became the president of honor of the Writers Union of Moldova. He was awarded different orders and medals and was conferred the title of People’s Writer. He is a member of honor of the Romanian Academy and a member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. On August 26, 2008, he won the State Award for exceptional contribution to developing national and universal culture and literature.
