Lawyer Ion Dron, who heads the Center for Initiatives and Public Authorities Monitoring, said he is afraid of the instigators who are infiltrated into the crowds protesting in the center of Chisinau. In the public debate “Professionalism of law enforcement bodies, behavior of the political class and protesters in the case of annulment of immunity and arrest of MP Vlad Filat, the leader of the PLDM”, staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova, he said he fears the state can no longer protect its people.
“For the first time, I had a feeling of fear when the Constitutional Court ruled that Vlad Filat can no longer be Premier. It is not about a particular person here, but about such a decision in principle. I also experienced fear when it was announced that the people protesting in the Great National Assembly Square will form people’s guards as I realized I can be hunted by my own neighbors. The third time I felt fear when a group of unauthorized persons started the hunt around the Parliament Building and when police officers opened obediently the trunks and showed what they had there. I now do not feel safe as such persons can any time come to my home to search it, my car, etc. I’m afraid things derailed. The state bodies should have acted and shouldn’t have allowed such actions as the people of Renato Usatyi didn’t have the right to do so,” he stated.
The lawyer noted he is not afraid that the protesters stay in the central square of Chisinau or near the Parliament Building. “I want those people to protest until the government leaves. But I also want the state to protect me from the instigators present there. I’m afraid of instigators who act, while the state does not react. The feeling of fear derives from the acknowledgement of the fact that the state cannot defend me,” said Ion Dron.
He stated that he wants those 79 MPs who voted for depriving Vlad Filat of parliamentary immunity to be solidary and to amend the legislation concerning the general immunity of all the lawmakers during 15 days. “As to the withdrawal of the immunity of Filat, the fact that the procedure lasted for 24 hours is not a violation. If the period of 15 days provided by the legislation had been used, the protesting people would have asked why it had to take so long,” explained the lawyer.
As to the publication of the self-denouncing statements of Ilan Shor and of documents about the politician’s double-entry bookkeeping, the lawyer said it was a controlled leak of information. “I think there will be no criminal case and no conviction for these leaks as this way they exert pressure on some of the MPs. As a citizen, I welcome the fact that the authorities moved from the slogans about the ‘fight against corruption’ to concrete actions as corruption has a name. But, if other similar cases are not sent to court, I will remain with the opinion that the law enforcement institutions show reflexes by order,” he stated.
The debate entitled “Professionalism of law enforcement bodies, behavior of the political class and protesters in the case of annulment of immunity and arrest of MP Vlad Filat, the leader of the PLDM” is the 42nd installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are held with support from the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
