Ion Dodon: E-prescription system will be implemented nationwide as from April 1

The e-prescription system will be implemented at national level starting with April 1, 2024. The director of the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) Ion Dodon said that the system will considerably facilitate the work of doctors, pharmacists, will improve the quality of healthcare and the people will no longer have to spend time at the door of doctors’ offices to be issued with a prescription. Now the system is being tested and doctors and pharmacists are being trained in digitizing the process of issuing a prescription, IPN reports.

The CNAM director noted that the e-prescription system will save patients and doctors time and exclude human errors in writing, processing and issuing medical prescriptions.

“Now the system is being tested in a number of districts of the country. The system is to start to be used on April 1, 2024. Until then we must test the system and correct the possible errors. We also need to train doctors, pharmacists and explain to them how this system works. It provides many benefits to the population. This system should lead to the improvement of the quality of healthcare, to debureaucratization. The people should no longer wait next to the doors of doctors’ offices. The consultations should not be doubled, both with specialists and with family doctors,” Ion Dodon stated in the program “In the Public Space” on Radio Moldova station.

He also said that owing to the e-prescription system, the patients will have easier access to prescriptions as the right of prescribing pharmaceutical preparations will be extended to cover more categories of doctors. Also, the compensated medicines and medical devices could be picked up at the pharmacy by a person empowered by the patient with this task.

“From 1 April, when the system will start to be applied, not only the family doctor, but also specialists in consultative sections, people who are part of the home care medical team, emergency admission doctors will have the right to issue prescription. Now the patient is given a prescription on paper and this goes to the pharmacy, leaves the paper there and takes the medicine. But there are cases when the pharmacy does not have all the necessary medicines. Some of the medicines are available at the pharmacy across the street. What should the person do? They cannot tear the prescription in two as they must leave it in one pharmacy. Now the system will enable the patient to use the prescription in two or three parts. Also, for partially compensated medicines, the people will be able to pay in installments, if they do not have all the necessary money that day,” explained the director of the National Health Insurance Company.

CNAM in 2023 launched the process of implementing the information system “e-Prescription for Compensated Medicines and Medical Devices”, which is now being tested at national level.
