Ion Creanga to be commemorated in Chisinau, Iasi

The 175th birth anniversary of the Romanian classic Ion Creanga will be marked in the period from February 27 through March 2 in Chisinau and Iasi with a series of events under the theme “The Days of Creanga”, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Ion Creanga made literature out of folklore. In fact, he is perhaps the only author in the world who transformed folklore into true literature”, said Claudia Balaban, the director of the Children's National Library “Ion Creanga”. “175 years after Creanga's birth his work is still vibrant. All the children know his tales. Even us the adults find ourselves in his work. That's why it's so important to pay homage to him”, she added. The Days of Creanga will be inaugurated with a free play for children inspired by Creanga's tale "The Old Man's Daughter and the Old Woman's Daughter". The agenda also includes a symposium, the screening of films about Creanga's work and life, quizzes and creativity contests, and collective reading sessions for children. The program will culminate with a pilgrimage to his native village, Humulesti, Romania. Born on 1 March 1837, Ion Creanga was a writer, storyteller and schoolteacher. He is best known for his Childhood Memories volume, his novellas and short stories and is revered as a children's author in both Romania and Moldova.
