Ion Ceban: Waste in Chisinau is managed better than anywhere else in Moldova

The waste collection and storage conditions in Chisinau are better than in any other place in the country, said mayor Ion Ceban, responding to those who accuse him of not efficiently handling the waste problem. In a news conference today, the mayor made reference to the waste dump in Boșcana, which is situated at the border with the municipality of Chisinau and belongs to Criuleni district, saying that this can cause an ecological catastrophe and should be therefore closed immediately, IPN reports.

The mayor spoke about the actions taken to persuade the environmental authorities to close the waste dump in Boșcana and about the relevant complaints they filed. No reaction followed yet. Meanwhile, the Chisinau City Hall has made effort to modernize the waste dump in Țânțăreni village of Anenoii Noi district and to develop the solid waste management system.

“We know that those who govern now want to create artificial problems to the Chisinau City Hall through the agency of the authorities in Anenii Noi and other localities so as to block the landfill in Țânțăreni, which is the only place in the country planned for storing waste,” said Ion Ceban, noting the municipality will spend millions on the modernization of this waste dump and local infrastructure. During the last two years, they invested 50 million lei in the waste dump in Țânțăreni and will transfer another 75 million lei to the Țânțăreni mayor’s office for the purpose during the next three years.

As to the accusations that the Chisinau City Hall hasn’t extended the contract with the private company ABS, which manages the network of waste sorting bins, the mayor said the company imposed conditions and they will not yield to the pressure exerted by this. Last year, the company asked 50 million lei from the Chisinau City Hall, arguing it is close to bankruptcy. The local authorities are ready to cooperate further with this company, but in the absence of manipulations and conditions that unjustifiably cause damage to the municipal budget.

Currently, ABS collects waste from those with which it signed contracts and sorts about 8-10% of the waste. The rest of the waste is taken to the waste dump in Boșcana, said Ion Ceban, noting that this waste dump poses threats and should be closed.

In a news conference earlier today, members of the group of the Party of Action and Solidarity on the Chisinau Municipal Council said the municipality of Chisinau is becoming more polluted and dirtier because mayor Ion Ceban lacks a view on waste management and is unable to implement relevant projects proposed by municipal councilors.
