Ion Ceban is favorite of this year’s local elections, iData poll

Incumbent mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban is the favorite of this year’s local electors. An iData poll shows that 43.3% of the respondents from the municipality of Chisinau intend to vote for him in the November 5 mayoral elections. If only the responses of decided respondents are taken into account, Ion Ceban would win the elections with 57.6% of the ballot.

Of all the respondents from the municipality of Chisinau, 14.2% would vote for Lilian Carp. 6.9% - for ex-deputy mayor Victor Chironda, 2.8% - for Vasile Costiuc. All the other candidates would gain 1.5% or less. 12% of those polled are determined not to cast their ballots. 8.8% don’t yet know who to vote for, while 3.5% didn’t answer.

According to the responses of the decided respondents, Ion Ceban, who would win the elections with 57.6% of the vote, is followed by Lilian Carp for whom 18.8% of the electors would vote. 9.1% would vote for Victor Chironda, while 3.7% for Vasile Costiuc. Other candidates would gain 2% and less.

“If we speak about the municipality of Chisinau, we extracted only the responses provided by respondents from the municipality – a sample of 234 persons. What does this sample mean? It means that the lower is the percentage in the results, the higher is the probability that the error is bigger. Respectively, in this case we can say that only the results for candidates Ion Ceban, Lilian Carp and Victor Chironda are significant. The others can be disputable, can be lower or higher, depending on the situation,” iData executive director Mihai Bologan stated in a news conference hosted by IPN.

Some 17.8% of those surveyed nationwide would vote for the mayor representing the Party of Action and Solidarity, 11.3% would vote for a candidate of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists, while 7.5% would vote for the representative of the “National Alternative Movement” Party on November 5. 7% of those interviewed would vote for an independent candidate. The respondents living in Cahul, Hâncești, Călărași, Orhei districts would vote for the PAS in a larger number than those living in northern districts. All those who would vote for the National Alternative Movement are from Chisinau. The Bloc of Communists and Socialists would be supported by more voters from Cahul, Căușeni, Orhei, Bălți and by fewer voters from Ialoveni and from some of the districts of Chisinau.

According to the survey, more than half or 52.8% of the respondents consider that things in the Republic of Moldova follow a wrong path, while 32.3% believe the path is correct. About 15% don’t have an opinion about this. Compared with the August and spring polls, fewer people are optimistic and the results are almost similar to those from January-February, when slightly over 30% considered the direction followed by Moldova was correct. At the same time, the level is not as pessimistic as in 2020.

The nationwide poll covered a sample of 1,002 respondents. Out of these, 95% were contacted by phone, while 5% filled out the questionnaire online.
