The sewage system of Chisinau municipality is old and investment is needed in it to ensure its stable working. According to SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau”, the renovation of the sewer pipes cannot be delayed and the high number of accidents confirms this, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from the water supplier, the sewerage system in Chisinau consists of 1,045 kilometers of pipes. Most of them started to be used in the 1970s and are about 70% worn-out. This fact affects the consumers as there is an unpleasant smell, the affected areas are flooded and there is a risk of cave-ins. More than 13,000 accidents happen yearly in sewer pipes. When the pipes become blocked, specialized teams wash and clean them. The sewer pipes are damaged and often burst. The company’s specialists identified the pipes that are in the worst state and need to be repaired immediately. 2 kilometers of sewer pipes are replaced annually, but this is not enough for improving the situation. According to the feasibility study “Water supply and wastewater treatment in the municipality of Chisinau program” for the next five years, 3 kilometers of water mains and 12 km of sewer pipes will be reconstructed additionally. A sum of €2.9 million was earmarked for the purpose.
