Investigative Journalism Centre launches Corruption Files II

The Investigative Journalism Centre (CIN) has launched the second volume of the book “Corruption Files” at a news conference held Thursday, April 19. This issue includes relevant corruption cases from different structures, such as influence peddling, shortcomings of the social and administrative systems, abuses etc, investigated and made public by the journalists in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. CIN Chairman Cornelia Cozonac said that the second volume includes 37 materials written by 8 of the best journalists in Moldova, between July 2005 and December 2006. Each investigation has a conclusion note, dated 2007, incorporating information about actions undertaken by the specialised bodies, the destiny of “the heroes” of the investigations, court decisions. In her words, making these investigation reports was a difficult task because law-enforcement bodies refused to offer the needed information. Moreover, they are not cooperating either at the stage when the journalists try to gather documents for the cases they investigate, especially when the investigations deal with high officials, Cozonac says. According to her, the most difficult cases for the journalists are those referring to the corrupt officials, as they are supported by the representatives of the law-enforcement bodies, the cases being hushed up, despite the obvious proofs regarding the involvement in corruption actions. Cornelia Cozonac says that although the investigative journalism is based on indubitable proofs, “the heroes” of certain investigation materials, published in the press, sued CIN and the newspapers. Although, in 3 years of activity, the Centre did not lost a single lawsuit, which proves the unbiased character of the investigations, authorities and legal bodies pretend they do not hear the corruption cases analysed by the journalists, CIN Chairman says. In this context, journalists Constantin Cheianu, who wrote introductions to both volumes of “Corruption Files”, said that the indifference shown by authorities to these investigative materials reveals their cynicism and unwillingness to fight this phenomenon. According to the cited source, investigative reporters deserve appreciation and admiration, because they carry an extremely difficult and risky battle for the weapons they have. The second volume of “Corruption Files” has recently come out at “Cartier” Publishing House.
