The Prosecutor General’s Office extended the investigations into the case of the stealing of money from Banca de Economii (BEM) and other banking institutions. In a press briefing on May 25, Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin said there will be investigated decision makers, including of the Government and Parliament, IPN reports.
The prosecutor ordered extending the investigation into the case of detrimental management of state property. It is to be established if the actions or the inaction of particular decision makers led to the loss of the majority shareholding owned by the state in BEM, which was later recovered.
The prosecutor general said there will be analyzed the actions of the Public Property Agency, the National Bank, and the National Commission for Financial Markets as well as of decision makers of the Government, Parliament, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy.
The investigation will be conducted by an extensive inquiry group. Searches will be carried out at the mentioned institutions. Some of the persons will be questioned. Corneliu Gurin didn’t want to say who namely will be questioned, noting that a lot of persons will be investigated.
Through the agency of bad loans issued by Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala and Unibank, an estimated 13 billion lei was taken out of the country. A number of former high-ranking officials of the Administration Board of BEM and businessmen who took out loans from the bank by swindle are now being investigated.
