Investigation sought into official papers' denationalization

Though the former government maintained the official newspapers Moldova Suverana and Nezavisimaya Moldova had been denationalized, there is no document confirming this, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting State Minister Victor Bodiu, who analyzed the situation at the two papers at Premier's request. He determined there was no document showing that the two publications had been denationalized after 2005, when the Communist government raised the issue. “In fact, it was initiated the procedure for liquidating the papers. By a decision, the government ordered that the two publications be liquidated. But the process was not finished,” he said. “It is true that three private economic entities registered with the State Registration Chamber under the mentioned names. The founders of the new private companies were the administrators of the official papers Moldova Suverana and Nezavisimaya Moldova. The old names were preserved,” Bodiu said. He also said that the new companies continued to illegally use the property of the official newspapers Moldova Suverana and Nezavisimaya Moldova and the state marks. “When the property is denationalized, the state earns money, revenues to the budget. But in this case the state sustained only losses. Besides, the government illegally allocated 1 million lei for clearing the two papers' salary arrears and other debts,” Bodiu said. According to him, other mass media institutions seem to be involved in this case as the former official papers created a concern with them. “The situation is rather complicated. The competent bodies, including the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime, are to conduct investigations and establish all the circumstances as, most probably, private economic entities use state property without paying rent,” Bodiu added. [Info-Prim Neo note:] In the corresponding period 2005, the factions of the Communists Party and the Christian Democratic People's Party in the Chisinau Municipal Council voted in favor of liquidating the municipal news agency Info-Prim, on the pretext and in the context of the denationalization of the two official papers. The agency formed part of the municipal media holding that included Radio Antena C and Euro TV Chisinau. On August 11, 2005, the agency's crew was forced out of the office located on Veronica Micle St. The office remained empty since then. The same factions rejected all the proposals to rent the office submitted by the editorial staff.
