International organizations are called to support political prisoners jailed in Tiraspol
Ombudsmen from Moldova requested the involvement of international organizations in speeding up the release of two Moldovan citizens, Andrei Ivantoc and Tudor Petrov-Popa, illegally detained by the separatist regime from Tiraspol.
The ombudsmen Raisa Apolschi, Iurie Perevoznic and Ivan Cucu send a petition to the Commissioner for human rights of CoE, Thomas Hammarberg, requesting his direct involvement in mediating the situation triggered by Russia’s unwillingness to execute the decision of ECHR concerning the case “Ilascu and others vs. RT and FR”.
Bearing in mind that Russia has done nothing to liberate the Moldovan citizens, despite the ECHR’s decision, the ombudsmen forwarded a similar petition to the resident representative of Russia to ECHR, Pavel Laptev, drawing his attention towards a potential precedent of non-execution of an ECHR decision.
Andrei Ivantoc and Tudor Petrov-Popa, part of Ilascu group, arrested in 1992, are still jailed in Tiraspol and Hlinaia penitentiaries.
