International Biennial of Painting at its seventh edition

The seventh International Biennial of Painting Chisinau will take place as part of the European Heritage Days. The exhibition will consist of 192 works made by 186 artists from 35 countries. It will be mounted at the National Museum of Arts of Moldova and will be inaugurated on September 22, starting at 5pm. For the first time, the 2021 edition will include works by laureates of the previous years, which will be displayed separately, IPN reports.

“As a result of a generous offer made by over 400 plastic artists with more than 1,500 works, we selected 192 of them signed by 186 artists for the exhibition. Regrettably, a part of the artists who were pre-selected could not send the works owing to the pandemic restrictions imposed in a number of countries. Among the exhibitors, 53 are from the Republic of Moldova, 64 from Romania, while 69 from other countries. Most of these form part of the young generation. Since the very first editions, we have endeavored to support the promotion of the young generation of artists, alongside the renowned artists. In time, we have witnessed the constant participation of young artists who keep an increased interest in our event and who show an exceptional evolution in artistic discourse, managing to assert themselves on the international exhibition arena,” the Biennial’s curator Tudor Zbârnea has told IPN.

According to a press release of the Biennial, an international conference entitled “Contemporary Art in International Context” will be staged at the National Museum of Arts on September 23, between 9am and 11:30am. Two arts albums signed by Pavel Șușară - “Theodor Pallady” and “Constantin Brâncuși” - will be launched at the end of the event. For the first time since the founding of the Biennial, there were admitted works in a digital technique.

Romanian art critic Pavel Șușară said it is very hard to identify a country or a significant place on earth that wouldn’t have gotten to Chisinau in a way or another. “In this situation, the new elements that intervene in the succession of editions should be looked for in significant details, in participants’ attitude and behavior changes and, evidently, in the substance of the works themselves. These observations accredit from the start the idea that the important data of this edition basically differ from those with which we got used during the previous episodes. The consistency of participations from Asia and Middle East, Africa, North America, Latin America, the ex-Soviet area and the former Socialist camp not only point to a constant interest in the big artistic projects, even if they appeared later on the cultural map of Europe, but also confirm the special need for artistic communication and solidary,” stated Pavel Șușară, who heads the jury of the International Biennial of Painting Chisinau - 2021.

The event is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova, being organized by the National Museum of Arts of Moldova, the Union of Plastic Artists, the Art Center “Amprente”  in partnership with the Culture Division of the Chisinau City Hall, the Sturdza Family Fund and Mobiasbanca OTP Group.
