Interior Ministry says senior official of Romanian Consulate is involved in illegal visa issuing
Employees of the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs discovered an organized network dealing with illegal visa issuing. A high ranking official of the Romanian Consulate in Chisinau, whose name is not revealed, is involved in this activity.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Valentin Zubic told a news conference on Friday that the respective official was empowered with decisional rights. Through his agency, the documents sent to the Romanian Consulate were accepted straight away and legalized during 7-10 days without being checked. Given the special status of the consulate employees, the case of the official will be investigated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova.
According to Zubiuc, employees of the Anticorruption Office and of the Center for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings arrested the director of a Chisinau travel firm that obtained entry visas to Romania for people that wanted to reach the European Union for 200 to 400 EUR. The documents were forged with the help of a senior employee of an institution of culture. He legalized forged documents, letters and applications that showed that the applicants were employees of the respective institution. Later, the set of documents was sent to the Romanian Consulate, where they were examined without delay.
The head of the travel agency was arrested, while the second person is investigated not under arrest. Both of them confessed their guilt. The police are to identify all the persons that left Moldova illegally through this network and to discover their whereabouts. The deputy minister said that none of the persons that left Moldova in such a way returned to Moldova.
Asked by a reporter of Info-Prim Neo to comment on the statements of the Interior Ministry, a representative of the Romanian Consulate asked for a written application. The electronic message was sent and the Agency will make the answer public later.
