Interior Ministry aims to halve number of road accidents by 2020

The Ministry of the Interior set the goal of halving the number of road accidents compared with 2010 by 2020, Minister Alexandru Jizdan was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

According to him, the number of road accidents that result in deaths has declined and such data cannot be falsified. “Compared with 2010, we aim to reduce by 50% the number of road accident and the number of persons hurt or killed on the national roads,” stated the official.

The minister noted that the Republic of Moldova has good laws, but not everyone respects them. “As long as our video surveillance system is not developed, the roads are not well lit and are of a poor quality and the drivers have the undesired behavior, the death rate will remain high,” stated Alexandru Jizdan.

As regards the inebriated drivers, the minister said the legislative amendments providing that the persons will be striped of the driver’s license for four years if they are caught  driving under the influence take effect on December 14. These drivers will also have to do community service and to go again through all the procedures for obtaining a new driver’s license. “The legislation was toughened up in a move to keep lives in our country,” stated the minister.
