Interim Premier is restricted in actions

Iurie Leanca, who takes up his duties as interim Prime Minster on April 25, is restricted in his actions. The interim Premier has the same power as the acting Premier. He can call meetings of the Government, but cannot take decisions to approve bills, except for emergencies.

Lawyer Vitalie Nagacevschi, expert in constitutional and administrative law, has told IPN that until the new Government is invested, the interim Premier has only the powers needed to keep the executive functional. “The interim Prime Minister can take emergency decisions in such cases as floods or terrorist attacks. He cannot pronounce on bills, except for situations when a law must be immediately approved or international acts must be ratified,” said the expert.

The interim Premier occupies the office of the previous Prime Minster. Even if named interim Premier, Iurie Leanca continues to hold the post of foreign minister. When certain events overlap, the position of Premier is given priority.

Iurie Leanca will serve as interim Prime Minister until a new executive is installed.
